Geneva: Crossroads of the World
Geneva — home of the United Nations, numerous international, non-governmental organizations and the headquarters of many multinational companies — is truly a global crossroads. Located between the Alps and the Jura mountains, and at the southwest tip of Lake Leman, Geneva is perhaps the smallest international city in the world with a population of less than half a million people. The center of Geneva stretches around the end of the lake with its famous water fountain soaring over 100 meters high, well above the roofs of the many banks and hotels along the lakefront. Its scenic Old Town is a treasure trove of interesting and historic sights.
When one considers that over 35 percent of the population of Geneva consists of non-Swiss, it is fair to say that Geneva is truly a melting pot of nationalities and cultures. This has given a very specific flavor to life in Geneva. The local language is French, but English is widely understood and spoken.
Transport
Geneva, an environmentally conscious city, has pursued a policy of limiting automobile use in town. Distances are short and all destinations in the city are readily accessible by the excellent public transport system. During rush hour, buses and trams run every few minutes. The buses also connect with destinations in neighboring France. The railway station in the middle of the city connects the traveller to major European cities. The high-speed French TGV train and the Italian Pendolino make the trip to Paris or Milan in a minimum of time.
Geneva has an international airport with daily flights to all major European centers and a few direct transcontinental flights. London, Berlin and Madrid are no more than an hour and a half away. The airport is easily accessible by bus or train. A trip from the airport to the center of the city takes no more than fifteen minutes.
Accommodation
Geneva has a long university tradition and therefore rooms for students are available all over the town. The typical monthly rent ranges from about 400 CHF for a small room with minimum amenities up to 1200 CHF and more for a studio.
Cost of Living
Geneva is one of the most expensive cities in the world. An annual budget of approximately 15,000 CHF, excluding accommodation, allows for reasonably comfortable living.
Leisure
Geneva is a center for all kinds of outdoor summer and winter sports. The Lake of Geneva has a large number of harbors and beaches, and the ski resorts of Mt. Blanc are about an hour away. The surrounding mountains provide opportunities for hiking, climbing and rafting.
